April 22nd 2016

Today was my Nans funeral.

It was chosen that the first hymn sang would be “All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small” she was a lover of nature.

As the coffin was brought in I looked over my shoulder to the entrance of the church. The pallbearers held her on their shoulders. My Mum nudged me and pointed at the stained glass window next to the entrance.

Perched on the window was a butterfly, flapping its wings. The first butterfly I’d seen of the Spring.

I don’t believe in God, I am not a religious man, I’m not saying that my Nan was there with us as a butterfly. But it was comforting. It was wonderful. It was beautiful.

I don’t believe in fate, I don’t think. I’ve never subscribed to organised religion, but it was…. Prevelent. Perhaps it was fate.

We all noticed it, and it stayed there throughout.

When the pallbearers carried Nan out of the church at the end of the service the butterfly was still there. Watching.

And it helped.

Until tomorrow, My Nan was a wonderful woman, I will miss her so much.
