Today I started building a website. Since I’ve had this blog I’ve not really taken much stock into what it looks like, or how much I can customise it or whatever, I’ve just typed in http://www.wordpress.com every day, clicked the ‘new post’ button and then babbled in the text box that appears for 500 or so words.
I changed the theme once, I think. And it does the job that I need it to do. Basically it’s just a place to store my diary that is easily sharable for the people who want to read it. But I’m going to try to start being more official with it. I want it to be a website, not just a blog. I purchased a new domain name, as well. I’m going to go through the process of creating the website and then find a way to install this blog within the site. I know that it can be done, I just don’t have a clue how.
To be honest, the main reason that I bought a new domain was because I liked the idea of having a personalised email address. I mean, I’ve had this email address since I was eleven, and it’s so long to type, and it always needs spelling out over the phone. Fortunately, eleven year old me had the foresight not to choose “itzyab01Jamz@hotmail.com” or “d3str0y3rJAM@live.co.uk” as my email address, so I’ve never had to change it when I’m trying to represent myself professionally for work, or study. But idk, I just like the idea of having a personal, email@example.com email, which required a new domain. And if I’ve got the domain then I may as well do something with it, right?
So I’m going to design a website. I know that I’ll eventually be able to host this blog on there. I don’t know what else I will do with it. Or rather, what else I want to do on it. I feel restricted within this blog, because it’s just a daily post about what I did today. And that’s fine, because that’s the point in it. But I want to be able to do other stuff as well. Like, I’m sitting on a football article that I wrote, and want to share, but I have no where else to put it because I want to keep that kind of thing off of this blog. It could go on my new site no problems, in fact, I could have a whole bespoke section for sports. Or film. Or travel. Or photography.
There’s loads of options.
The benefit I have, too, is that I work at a company that literally provides these kind of website hosting/website building services. I guess that’s what has spurred my interest in building a new website.
I don’t know how a migration to a new website/platform would affect my current blog situation. I assume that I’d just be able to continue blogging from here, and that would load the posts onto the website. I don’t know though.
Until tomorrow, I should probably ask.
