Today was a bit of a whiteout. It’s our second day on the mountain on our skiing holiday in Avoriaz, and it hasn’t stopped snowing since we got here. That sounds like it would be a good thing, but it really isn’t. It actually stopped us skiing today, which is kinda counterintuitive.

We were on a skiing lesson at the time as well. We’d booked a lesson between 1pm and 3pm, and were just over halfway through it when the instructor stopped and told us that we had to finish early because he’d heard thunder. The cynic in me told me that he was probably just lying to us so that he could get off work a bit earlier, but then I heard the thunderclap and the announcement that the entire mountain was closed. And thus our lesson was officially cut short.

Somehow, even though we’ve had our lesson end prematurely, we’ve had to pay him an extra €50 between us.

To make up for the fact that our lesson ended 50 minutes earlier than it should’ve he offered us a free thirty minute lesson, so long as we paid for an hour’s lesson first. Effectively, he was going to give us an hour and a half for the price of an hour. Which sounds like a good deal, but not when we’d already paid for the lesson in the first place.

The good news is that we’ll hopefully come out of all of these lessons as totes pro skiiers.

The mountain was effectively closed from that point onwards, so we didn’t really get a great deal of skiing in today. We did however have to walk an entire kilometre up the mountain whilst carrying our skis because all of the lifts were closed, so that was a good workout.

Until tomorrow, it was a whiteout.
