Today it’s Welsh Varsity in Cardiff. That’s basically Swansea vs Cardiff University playing eachother in 15 different sports across 50 different events. When I was at Cardiff Uni, Varsity was always one of the best days of the year. It was basically an entire day of drinking beer and watching sport with all your mates. Great stuff.

One of my old Uni mates text us all today and said he was on the train to work, and all of the Swansea Uni students were getting ‘binned on the tins on the 8:31 train to Cardiff’ (his words, not mine). He said he wishes he could go back and relive those days.

I’m kind of on the fence about that.

Uni was great fun. I drank a load of beer, watched a load of sport, played a load of video games, and came out at the end with a Maths degree. The structure of my course basically meant that I had most of the year off, I just had to work hard for a month at Christmas and a month in the Summer for exams, the rest of the time we all just pissed around. And that was great – at the time. I don’t know whether I’d want that to still be my life now.

Now, I’ve got a job (with absolutely no relation to my Maths degree – go figure), a girlfriend, my own house, a hamster… It’s a different life. No more, or less enjoyable, just different. Different things make me happy now, I’m motivated by different things. That being said, I still want the same things out of my life. I decided fairly early on in my degree that I didn’t want to work in a bank for the rest of my life.

I think I’m slowly getting to where I saw myself heading when I was at Uni.

The great thing about University was that I had so much free time. I wrote my first novel in a month during my second year, because I had nothing else on. 15 hours of lectures has turned into 40 hours of full-time work, with 10 hours of commuting. I used to go to bed at 4am and wake up at 8am, now I sleep at 11pm, and wake up at 6am.

Life has just changed a lot since Uni. And it feels like, simultaneously, ages ago, and no time at all since I was at Varsity.

Until tomorrow, not good, not bad, just different.
