Today I continued my goal of watching all of Empire’s top 100 films. Tonight’s film was Se7en (intentionally spelt with the seven inside the seven). It’s a film about a religious, ritualistic murderer who turns out to be Kevin Spacey. The murders happen over the course of a week, seven murders in seven days (eight, kinda) – six (seven, kinda) of them by Spacey. All of the murders represent one of the seven deadly sins: Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Pride, Lust, Envy, Wrath.

No one actually kinda technically gets murdered for ‘Wrath’, but I won’t spoil the ending. I would’ve liked a bit more explanation about why each victim was chosen, but I get that they had to kinda skip over it for time reasons – seven murders is a lot for one film.

It’s pretty brutal. The murders get increasingly disturbing to the point where they don’t even show the results of the last two because they’re too brutal. I imagine there’s a cutting room floor somewhere with the shots of the last two, but they didn’t make the final edit of the film, thankfully.

I’ve got a feeling that quite a few of the films on the 100 list are going to be like this. Particularly the ones staring Kevin Spacey (of which there are many).

I did, however, enjoy Se7en, even if it was quite predictable. I called who the killer was going to be, what they’d find in his apartment, and how the final showdown would go down. (the picture below is a spoiler)

Until tomorrow, I called it right down to the head in the box.
