Twothousand

23rd June 2020

Today marks two thousand days of consecutive blog posts. On January 1st 2015 I made the decision to start posting a blog every day. Two thousand days later, and I’m still going.

Full disclosure: I had one blip. Maybe two.

There was one day where I woke up in the morning and realised that I’d fallen asleep without posting a blog, and so I hurried one out at 8am the following day.

I mean, considering I spent three weeks of this year in New Zealand’s GMT+13 timezone, that probably wasn’t even the latest I’d ever posted a blog for the day before. It just depends on your relative interpretation of the man-made construct of time.

On that trip, because I flew west from San Francisco to Auckland, I flew over the International Date Line and so never actually experienced January 30th 2020. There’s a blog post for that date, but really that date just disappeared for me.

And so those are the two exceptions. But even considering those, there is still a blog post for every single one of the last 2000 days. And that’s pretty cool.

I was a different person 2000 days ago, and this blog has been there to document that change. In that time I’ve:

  • Graduated University
  • Travelled to 21 countries
  • Moved house four times
  • Ended a ten year relationship
  • Been offered 7 jobs
  • Published a novel
  • Started a magazine
  • Lost my Nan to cancer
  • Become an uncle

I sometimes consider this blog a chore, but I’m glad that I’ve had it as a way of documenting all of that stuff that has happened. Because sure, I remember the headlines, but I don’t remember the detail. And yeah, because at some point this blog picked up an audience, sometimes I don’t include as much detail as I perhaps would like to.

Since January 1st 2015 these blog posts have been read 88,250 times. And if you remove my Mum from those views that’s at least 10,000 views from other people. Jokes aside, there have been 24,210 unique readers. 24,209 if you exclude my Mum.

I’ve written 670,159 words in total. Plus the 400 odd that this one will end up being.

Two thirds of a million words. That’s quite something. The table above shows that my word output is slowing down. Blogs are shorter. They’re less detailed. Sometimes that’s intentional, because there are some things that I can’t write about in a forum accessible to my Mum and my boss. Sometimes I omit detail because I’ve fallen out of love with writing this. But I’m still here. I’m still going.

Until tomorrow, two thousand days strong.
